ABOUT

Composer, Performer, Sound Artist

Ivan Clayden is a Composer and Performer based in Ōtautahi/Christchurch, NZ. His artistic journey is guided by a deep appreciation for environmental sounds and sonic exploration, as he strives to craft immersive compositions that reflect the beauty and diversity of the world around us.

With a keen focus on environmental sound composition and sonic arts, Ivan's work draws upon a rich tapestry of field recordings captured from remote locations across New Zealand and beyond. From the tranquil melodies of native birdsong to the rhythmic textures of wind and water, each recording serves as a source of inspiration and connection to the natural world.

Ivan has had the privilege of composing for chamber and solo performers, with his works performed and recorded both locally and internationally. His compositions have been showcased at venues and exhibitions around NZ, including the Tai Tapu Sculpture Garden in Canterbury, where he has participated in exhibitions from 2021 to 2024.

In 2020, Ivan's composition "Forest Ringlet" for solo flute earned him a place as a finalist in the FNMC international flute composition competition.

During his time at NZSM, Ivan studied Horn under mentors such as Sam Jacobs and Heather Thompson, and has performed with ensembles including Orchestra Wellington and the RNZAF Band. As a finalist in the NZSM Brass competition in 2018, he continues to maintain a dynamic performance schedule.
